Where are the elements??

Great layouts using the template last week!  I love the monster eyes that Tami put on the Mickey pumpkins.  Lynn had photos of the Easter Parade!  I admit.. I have never been to Disney for the Easter Parade.  And Brenda, I doubt you all had to do the "shush" sign.  When kids tucker out at Disney, they generally sleep very soundly!!  I always feel bad because of some of the positions they are in.  And poor Amy - she couldn't get Linky to work because some dummy put the wrong date in!! Oh! That would be me!  I'm real sorry about that, Amy.. but I did correct that and I posted both your layout and Tami's layout via Linky on your behalf.

Someone asked me how I seem to get depth in the word art that I use.  It's one of those closely guarded secrets, but I don't mind sharing it with our readers.  After I bring the word art in to Photoshop Elements, I resize it and place it where I would like it to be. I add a shadow to the word art. THEN...  I add some additional layers to the word art.   And maybe a few new elements. In the word art I used in my layout last week, I added the pumpkin, resized it to fit. Added a shadow. I added the sunflower again, resized, shadowed. Added the gourd, sized it, shadowed it.  Sometimes, I add the word art twice. Making sure to resize exactly so it fits perfectly to the first one.  By doing this, and adding shadow to each element/layer added, the illusion of depth is created. I think you get the idea. I would actually have to go look at the psd file to know how many different elements I duplicated and shadowed.  Right now... my new hidden elements game is open in psd. If anyone has more questions about this technique, feel free to drop me a note at coyotelady at gmail.com.

I did something a little different with this week's hidden element game.  My file consists of:

  • Eight elements
  • My photo which is grouped to a blending layer
  • The background paper

Which means, I hid those eight (8) elements within the photo. They are small. So I decided, I would post a 600x600 jpg (100% quality) and then upload the image to my dropbox, full size at 3600x3600 jpg.  To access the full size image, just click on the layout.

Your mission - find at least FIVE (5) of those eight (8) elements.  Tell me (1) what they are and (2) where they are in the layout. Send this to me at coyotelady at gmail.com.  You have until October 27, 2013 at 7:59 AM to email me your answers.  If you have at least 5 correct answers, you'll go into the randomizer and one lucky duck will be randomly selected to receive a $3.00 coupon to Connie's store! Remember - Five of the eight elements must be found... you must tell me what they are... and where they are. The only hint I am giving this week:  all elements are from Halloween kits Connie released this year.  That said.. here is the layout.

Next week, I will post the layout again with the elements circled. Good luck hunting!!

Epcot International Food and Wine Festival, Remy and a Freebie!

It's already here!!  The 2013 Epcot Food and Wine Festival began September 27 and runs through November 10, 2013.  I have to admit that the food at DisneyWorld is really amazing.  And then the Wine and Food Festival starts and the game is stepped up! So many different booths with culinary delights from around the world are featured throughout the World Showcase.

For those of you headed that way... I do hope you made your reservations early!  So many of the events and seminars are sold out as of Sept 4, 2013.   You can view the list of sold out events here: For those who have not yet been to this amazing festival, you might just be interested in reading over this material and setting it as a special goal for a vacation.

You can view the list of low cost seminars and demonstrations here:

You can view the list of Epcot Food and Wine Festival Special Events here:  My favorite would definitely be the "3D" Disney's Dessert Discovery. Special desserts, cordials, special viewing of IllumiNations. Our family is a regular at the Dessert Party in Tomorrowland Terrace at Magic Kingdom. Desserts are awesome.. and the firework seating is to die for!   Second favorite.. the cheese seminars.

You can view the list of World Showcase Booths (including menus and photos) here: Be sure to click on the links to view the booths, menus and drool over some food samples.

It's not just food and drink!  There is a full schedule of "Eat to the Beat Concerts" during the festival! The list is always subject to change.   You can view the concert schedule here:   There are three shows nightly to catch your favorites. Shows start at 5:30 PM, 6:45 PM and 8:00 PM.  This year's line up includes such greats as Air Supply, Sister Hazel, Sugar Ray, The Manhattan Transfer, Pointer Sisters, Smash Mouth, Christopher Cross, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy to name a few.

And scrappers.. be sure to pick up your Festival Marketplace Discovery Passport from the Festival Welcome Center. As you travel the World, be sure to collect the unique passport stamps from the Marketplaces that you visit.

I am going to go ahead and add The Disney Food Blog to the Disney Hint's  page.  You can find recipes there. Awesome recipes!  You will find tons of information about the restaurants, the menus, the dining plans. They do have some ebooks that they sell there. I really don't recommend paying for that information when you can actually rustle it all up on the internet for free. Save those dollars for Disney instead!! If there is something you want to know, drop me an email, leave a comment. If we (Chrissy and I) don't already have that information hanging around our computers, we can find it for you.

Oh! Before I forget, the correct answer to last week's Hidden Layout game..... 13.  You expected something other than that this Halloween season??   Let me show you that Haunting Halloween

Mini Kit.  If you hurry on over to MouseScrappers, you can still get this kit free by accepting my Weekly Challenge #204!!  The challenge runs through October 8, 2013.

I really want to share with you my layout for the  In Vino Veritas kit Connie recently released at the GingerScraps Buffet.

Remy, the Little Chef, can be found at the Chefs de France Restaurant located in France on the World Showcase.  He comes to your table on this little tray with cheese and grapes. He moves. He talks. He is adorable!!  But he can't do autographs.

This week, I wanted to give you all a little something I made using In Vino Veritas.  I hope you can all use this for a special layout of your trip to a very special place. If not now.. in the future!  Click on the image to start your download. You may also click here for the download to start.  (Link corrected 10-6-13 at 10:12 AM)

Until next week then!!

Scrapping the Magic Kingdom: Jungle Cruise Contest

I would like to thank Debbie Neace for sharing her layout with us on last week's post! She did not use Linky, but did leave a comment with the the to her layout.  I want to share that with you all now!! Click on the image to go to the original post at ScrapBookBytes. Her inspiration was castle.  (Do not fear Linky!)

Our tools for this week are a little different!! I will be providing you with the color palette for the Jungle Cruise and the font (called Jungle Fever).  I will also be providing you with a free word art that I created using this font and some elements from Connie's Animal Crackers Zoo Pals elements.

Your mission, should you accept, is to create a layout using this word art!  Okay.. I know everyone hasn't been to Disney yet (why not????) so I am going to throw in some of my photos from the Jungle Cruise ride.  You may feel free to use these photos for this contest. (Using my photos is NOT a requirement.)

Once your layout is created, you can upload the link to our post using the little Linky tool.  If you have any trouble at all, please feel free to drop me an email at coyotelady(at)mac.com.  You will have all week to work on your layouts. Once Linky turns off, no more layouts will be accepted.  One lucky winner will receive a $5 coupon to Connie's store!

The winner will be selected using the random tool.  I will include all of your layouts in next week's post.  Both Connie and I are really looking forward to seeing some participation this week.  So let's get started with those tools!

There are two Jungle Fever fonts available at 1001fonts.com. The top font is Jungle Fever Regular NF. The bottom font is Jungle Fever Inline NF. They are on the same page so I would grab them both while you are there. Click on the font sample image or the words 1001fonts.com. A new window will open for you to download the fonts.

The color palette for the Jungle Cruise is next up. It is not absolutely necessary you follow the color palette, but it does give a great starting point.  While this color palette works great with the sign, you'll find lots of greens and animal shades on the ride itself.  (Right click on the color palette and select the save as option to save the color palette.)

While we are talking about the ride, I would like to interject that there was a time this was a very serious ride based on Disney's True Life Adventure Series.  Since Animal Kingdom has opened, and there are "real" animals at the park, Jungle Cruise has fallen from serious to downright comedic. Jungle Cruise is believed to be the funniest ride in DisneyWorld. The boat narrator will go through a number of jokes during your ride.  You can read many of these "jokes" here.   Bad jokes included, it can be a nice ride and the displays still hold merit. Jungle Cruise is one of the Fastpass rides and does operate in the evening.  Actually, I want to ride it in the evening some time if only to see how it is handled. Guests in wheelchairs or ECVs may remain in them for the ride. The ride itself is just a little over 9 minutes long.

Now to share some of my photos.  To download a photo you would like to use, right click and choose save as option.  This works for both PC and Mac users.

Lastly, the word art! The preview is 600 x 600. The download will be the full size and contain both shadowed version and no shadow version.  Click here  or on the image to begin your download!
This is so exciting!  I can't wait to see your layouts!! Until next week........

Scrapping Magic Kingdom Continued - Haunted Mansion

This week, we will be scrapping the Haunted Mansion.  Of course there is a color palette!  Here it is:

Haunted Mansion is a favorite ride of many.  As such, you would expect there to be font that is perfect for those layouts.  The font is called Gracey's Curse and is available free at several places. Click on the sample to download the TTF. Don't you love the bat in the H??

Now that we have our beginnings to the perfect Haunted Mansion layout..  before I share my layout, I have a story to tell!  I thought I had talked about this, but I sure can't find it in prior posts.  On one of those magical "behind the scenes" tours,  the included ride was Haunted Mansion. We learned so much about how the Imagineers put this awesome ride together.  But one thing stuck in Joe's mind.  It's actually more of a safety feature for guests, but when exiting the ride, the wall on the right is "soft". Not an actual wall. Looks like a wall, but if you bump into it, you bounce off it rather than being hurt.

I bet you know where I'm going with this!  And you're right!  We rode Haunted Mansion later in the day with Chrissy and Andy. As we were exiting, Joe was talking to the kids, looking at them rather than where he was walking.  He edged over and over until he walked into that wall! Of course he embellished on this... staggering.. limping...and acting weird. The kids were just mortified... until I started to bust out laughing.  They knew something was up right there!  So we told them the story and each had to try the wall.  (I don't suggest you try this until you know exactly which wall this is!) Yep, you're right. We're a goofy family.

There are so many places you can read about the Haunted Mansion.  For older folks, I think that is probably the most appealing ride.  On our last visit to Disney World, we found that the queue (waiting line) had been updated.  It was now an "Interactive Queue".  (Click on "Interactive Queue" to see more about this update.)

Doom Buggies they are called.  The special name given to the cars that take you through the mansion.  You've all seen that ghost or two than hops into the Doom Buggy with you.  Here is a terrific site that really digs into the secrets that make this ride so awesome!!  Imagineers and details..details..details... that is what Disney is all about!  Click on Doom Buggy and enjoy!!

For those of you who may have not enjoyed this ride personally, you can find lots of videos on  You Tube.   I rather like this one when I "go to my Happy Place".

Disney can really decorate and makes changes according to the season and holiday.  This surely applies to Halloween season. The Haunted Mansion had a special added to their photo spot.  The ghosts magically appear in your PhotoPass photos!   I blended one of our ghosts into my layout for fun.  That said, here is my Haunted Mansion layout:

I actually took from a variety of kits for this layout. I started with Connie's Blend In Temps Vol 1, temp 2 which is new this month in the Templatetopia!!  Papers were taken from: Blue Skies, Beneath the Beauty,  School Blues and Road Warrior. The clock is from Remember When.  Leaf twig is from Wild and Free.  The admit one ticket is from Mouse in the House.  Credits for the flowers go to Laitha's Designs, Insolent Passion.  (Haunted House just needed black flowers.) Credit for the blendable.png layer for the ghost goes to Jen C. Designs.

Until next week......

Scrapping Magic Kingdom Continued.....

So who has used last week's Started By A Mouse font on a Magic Kingdom layout?  I would love to see some layouts from the readers.

Before I created my layout, I took a peek at the color palettes I have tucked away on Pinterest. (Feel free to check those out, by the way!)  I chose the castle, which is probably the most iconic symbol of Magic Kingdom.  Here is the color palette:

I looked through many of Connie's kits and finally decided on the following background shade from Project 2013: April, solid7.jpg.  This is the bottom layer, on which the blended photo of the castle sits.  For the darker blue, I decided on Project 2013: June, solid2.jpg.  The two twigs are from Main Street Magic. The rest of the papers and elements are from Trashed, Tattered & Torn as these were very close to the palette. The font, of course, is Started By A Mouse.  This is perspective of the castle is from one of several Kodak Picture Spots.  (For those who are new to Disney, look for those Kodak Picture Spots. They are positioned for great photos with less traffic from other visitors. You will often find PhotoPass Photographers at these spots throughout the day and evening.)

Now that we are in Magic Kingdom, it's time to think about Main Street!  That is our next font. The closest font to that used by Disney is called Algerian Becker. You can download it for free here or click on the font sample below. Note that after you select your system, you will need to enter a captcha code to prove you are human.

Font: Algerian Becker

I used one of the solid papers from Connie's Main Street Magic as a background for this font so you could see it more clearly.

While we are thinking about the castle, next time you talk a walk down Main Street, look carefully at the castle. You will see that the bricks used get smaller the higher the castle goes.  The Imagineers calls this the "forced perceptive" technique.  (The castle is not the only structure this technique is used.) The castle looks taller than it actually is. The tallest point of the castle is 189 feet, and the tallest structure in the Magic Kingdom. This was the maximum height without requiring a red light to warn aircrafts. There are 18 towers.  The moat surrounding the castle holds 3.37 million gallons of water.

So.. how are you all liking the new blog design?? You may have noticed the little Linky over there. Yep. He's new! And we are really hoping you will all start to take advantage of Linky and participate more! That said... I would love to have you link up layout you created using last week's font! It's easy. If it goes well, we may just upgrade Linky to include thumbnails.. which would be totally awesome. Meanwhile.. link up.. and keep an eye on out outstanding layout page!! That's new, too!  Just click on the button that says "add your link".  Follow the instructions. Leave comments if you have questions or comments!

Main Street Windows

I think the trivia question was too easy last week! LOL Maleficent is featured in  FANTASMIC in DRAGON form! The Randomizer says the winner is: THE ELWELLS' WEEKLY! Congratulations!  Erica's $3 store coupon has already been emailed.

Now that we have the matter of the contest taken care of... how about some more little known Disney facts? You all seem to like those.

You've heard me say before that when things get rough for me, I just close my eyes and starting walking down Main Street. While I don't have it committed to memory, there are many parts of Main Street I can envision in my mind. It gets me through more than I care to talk about!

You may also remember that I mentioned the effect of walking into a theater when you enter Disney World. This feeling is actually carried out down most of Main Street. The second floor windows along Main Street are set in order of opening credits in a movie. You won't find Walt's name until the end above the Ice Cream Parlor. Roy O. Disney's (Walt's brother) window credit can be found above the confectionary store. While there are a number of other "credits", other Disney Executives, Contributing Artists and family, there is one window in particular I would like to address.

There is a real estate window which contains the dummy corporations that Walt used in the acquisition of the land for Disney World. Back in 1959, market surveys revealed that only 2% of Disneyland's visitors were from east of the Mississippi. Astonishingly, 75% of the population lived east of the Mississippi at that time. Disneyland opened in 1955, and other businesses quickly began to spring up around that location, which distressed Walt.  A much larger area of land was required for his new project.

Walt's first fly over was Sanford, Florida. He appealed to the city council to allow him to build Disney World there, but was declined as the citizens of Sanford did not want the crime that was sure to come with tourism. Walt Disney first flew over the Orlando site on the day John F. Kennedy was assassinated and fell in love with the well developed network of roads and the Air Force Base which later became Orlando Airport. Various dummy corporations were used to acquire the 27,400 acres that is now Disney World.  Sadly, Walt died on Dec. 15, 1966, a good five years before his vision was realized.  His brother, Roy, postponed his retirement to oversee the construction of the resort's first phase. Roy died Dec. 20, 1971, barely three months after the property opened. Statues to both Roy and Walt are prominent on Main Street and "must sees" when you visit Disney World.

Using those dummy companies was a brilliant move on Walt's part.  His first acre cost $80 and the last one purchased was $80,000. Walt knew if the property owners knew the purchase was for him they would jack up their selling prices. The dummy companies were unknowns and until a reporter in Miami investigated the realty company (M. T. Lott Realty) and found it was owned by Mrs. Minnie Mouse, Walt was able to purchase a good amount of the property at real savings. Once the news leaked out, the price of the real estate skyrocketed. These companies enjoy credits on this Real Estate Investment window.

The window has a lovely canopy over it which makes photographing a bit difficult.  The upper portion of the window reads on both the left and right panes:

M.T. Lott
Real Estate
Investments

I don't know if it is the reflection of the canopy or perhaps matching drapes inside the window, but it is hard to see this and the bottom credits as well. Just take a moment though, and read that portion out loud.  Walt's sense of humor at work. :)

The lower left window pane reads as follows: "A Friend in Deeds is a Friend Indeed."  Donn Tatum, President. Let's stop here for just a moment.  Donn Tatum was the first non-family member to head the Walt Disney Company. He was also the very first president of Walt Disney World.  So you can see the importance of his "credits" along Main Street.

The lower right side of the window reads as follows:   Subsidiaries, Tomahawk Properties, Latin American Development, Ayefour Corporation, Bay Lake Properties, Reedy Creek Ranch Lands, and Compass East Corporation.  The land acquisition began in 1964 from more than 100 property owners at a total cost of nearly $5.5 million dollars. Since then, another 2000 acres have been added.  (By the way, Ayefour - think I4 - the interstate next to Disney World.  More of Walt's humor showing through!)

I did prepare a layout of these Main Street Windows, but they are so difficult to see and I really wanted to share this piece of Disney history with you.  Next time you visit, be sure to look up as you walk down Main Street.  I don't know about you, but Joe and I are always present for both opening and closing credits at any movie.  You just never know. There might be a really terrific short after the movie! ;)  For the layout, I used Connie's Mouse In The House Bundle along with a free word art add-on. The font, called Walter, is one of my favorites when scrapping Disney.

A reminder to Connie Prince template fans!  Template Challenge #178 just started at MouseScrappers yesterday. It continues through August 2nd. Come on over and join us for some fun!

Don't forget about the Designs By Connie Prince Retiring Products Sale going on now through July 31st! Last chance to grab these kits at terrific savings!

In closing, we are going to do this trivia question one more time.  In what movie does a New York cat teach a Hollywood dog how to beg?  One random winner with the correct answer will receive a $3 coupon to Connie's store! Please be sure to include your email address so I can contact you if you win. Answers must be posted by Friday, July 26th at 5:00 PM EDT.

Please feel free to leave any questions or comments you may have.  I sure hope you are all enjoying the Disney tidbits and history! Until next week......

Color Challenge

I have to start off this week with  HUGE thank you to Connie for saving the day at MouseScrappers and the Template Challenge.  No one had signed up... it was two days late posting... so I dropped Connie a quick email and just as quickly she responded with a Template for us to use!!   If you're interested, Template Challenge #174 runs through July 5th. Glad to have you participate!!  (Click here to check it out!)

Also, the Weekly Challenge is under way and the kit from Connie is MEGA-CUTE!!  I will share that with you now!

Isn't this just the cutest???  I can't thank Connie enough for all she does for us over on MouseScrappers.  If you would like to receive this kit, you'll have to come on over to MouseScrappers and do my challenge!  It's a color challenge.  Because of the holiday, our weekly challenge is actually two weeks this time around. So you have until July 9th to participate and receive this awesome mini-kit!!  (Click here or on the image to visit us at the Weekly Challenge #191) Remember, this kit is not for sale.  It is a participation prize only!

So - Disney trivia. We'll start with that today!  I have had Disney on the brain the last few days since I had to go to the dentist. Our dentist is always talking Disney with us. In fact, he even emailed me once for hints about things to do!  I laughed a little when he scrunched up his face, hand covering it as he was trying to think and place a location. He gave up saying, "I just can't see it in my head like you do!"  LOL!  Poor Dr. Mike!  (We had been talking about the Plaza Restaurant.)  I told him he just needs to take Chrissy and I along with him on his next trip.. and we will make sure his kids have tons of fun.

I think in my initial post I mentioned how the entrance to Magic Kingdom (Disney World) was like the lobby of a theatre.  Disney is priming their guests for the things to come.  Excitement begins to build as you pass through that arch.  The Castle is up Main Street a way.  Fresh, and ready for the days fun, visitors don't notice that the walk up Main Street is actually an incline! Small one.. but incline all the same.  Conversely, when you are leaving the park, you are walking downhill.  This was done on purpose!  Walking downhill is a breeze, even tired from a full day of fun.  You don't leave with a feeling of "boy, this is a long walk".   It's true! One of the many thousands of details that Disney has paid special attention to in order to make your visit the best ever!   This was easy for Disney to accomplish because..... (wait for it....)   Ground level is NOT ground level!  It is actually the second story to the utilidors!  You must remember, that all the property that was purchased was pretty much swamp land, so Disney could build it as they wanted/needed.  We'll hear more about these utilidors in upcoming posts.  The utilidors are one of Disney's best secrets.  I first learned about them years and years ago when I enrolled my oldest daughter in a Art Program at DisneyWorld.  It was held under the park. I was SO jealous when she told me about all the things she had seen there!  By the time I got down there (and I had to pay for the backstage tour), it was quite different. Being the curious coyote, I did ask questions about this, and received answers. But again, that will be for the future.

Here are a couple of layouts that I created using Connie's Tropical Escape.
The Spitting Tikis in Adventure Land were a no-brainer for me.  The tiki elements, flowers, and colors were all perfect.

The Ohana Character Breakfast, held at the Polynesian Restaurant.  The background paper was perfect!

One should never overlook the power of colors.   Especially when it comes to Disney! There is no "one" color palette.  I know everyone immediately things bright reds, yellows and black when thoughts of scrapping Disney come up.  And yes, these are the basic colors for Mickey and Minnie.  But there is SO much more to Disney.  Blasphemous, I know.... but very true. :) And no one knows how important color is better than Disney.  Every area, every land, every ride.. is carefully planned. From color to music. It all matters.  As well as transitioning from one to another.  It is done so seamlessly that people are totally unaware of shifts in color and music.

That said, here is one of many color palettes for Animal Kingdom.  For more information about color

palettes (and more), click on the image.  I thought I fell into heaven when I stumbled on this site via Pinterest.  It confirmed what I had always known.   Gee, did I give away one of my scrapping secrets? LOL!   Seriously, I don't mind sharing one bit.  So, let's do an experiment! Using one of Connie's kits, I challenge you all to share with me a layout using the above Animal Kingdom colors. Connie has more than one that will meet this color challenge.  I don't think this blog is set up to show a layout, but you can certainly post a comment with a link to a gallery.  I would love to see what you all create!!   (Please be mindful of copyrights!  Your own photos would be appreciated!)  Here is my layout, using Connie's This or That: Animal Cracker Bundle: (The font is African - one of my favorites for Animal Kingdom layouts.)

One thing I like to do on my layouts is using one of Connie's Flairs in place larger circles.  By the way, my layout started with AnimalCrackersTemp1. Before I run off for the week, I have to tell you that the This or That:Animal Cracker Bundle is on sale for $9.99.  Click here!  This or That: Animal Cracker Bundles provides you with both Zoo Pals and Farm Friends. Read the description for included add-ons.

Looking forward to seeing your Animal Kingdom layouts!
Until next week......
